Back in the early 1990s, I was working as a breakdown and accident recovery mechanic for a national recovery company in Lancashire. Our hours were long—6 days a week, 12-hour days on call all night—so not much time for a social life, but the pay was incredible; it was a means to an end for me. 20 years ago, as a 43-year-old man my partner at that time and indeed for 12 years, she was 18 years my junior and we had, had a baby together.
