Choosing a Hair Style

Choosing a Hair Style

All TGs and CDs alike eventually need to choose a hairstyle. Some like to choose many! TGs are in an enviable position as they can grow their hair natural and then hair style it however they like. A good hair salon is just their ticket!

For cross dressers it gets a bit more tricky. Usually the CD has to use a wig and these come in all different shapes, sizes and colors as well as quality. When I was first starting to dress, I said to myself “blondes have more fun”. And voila! I was a blonde. However it didn’t look that natural on account I have naturally brown hair and brown eyebrows. I’ll eventually add to this post a picture of me back in my early days.

Over time as I gained more self confidence, I learned that the right way to purchase a wig is to go into a professional wig store and just saunter up to the counter and say “I need a wig”. This can be especially easy if it is August, September or October leading up to Halloween. You can let the person know that you've made a commitment to be a girl for Halloween and that you want to look great and that money is no option.

Regardless of your explanation, and personally I use none, I have found like most all businesses, THEY WANT YOUR BUSINESS! And will only be too happy to set you up. There are some do’s and don't(s) but for the most part, you can begin the process by pointing to a dozen or more wigs and have them try them on you. This is actually a lot of fun. And if somebody comes into the store while you are seated trying on the wigs… WHO CARES! What is important is that you get a decent looking wig that looks good on you.

Wigs come in different price points and quality. The more inexpensive wigs are made of synthetic hair. You can expect to spend $200-$300 for a wig of this type. The more expensive and much better looking wigs are the ones that are actually made of human hair. Yup, human hair! Women grow their hair long, and then sell the hair that is then purchased by wig companies to make real human hair wigs. These wigs are usually in the $500 range.

Once you have settled on a wig color and length that works for you, the professional wig store can style it or cut it further for you such as giving further shape to bangs, etc.

Keep in mind that as you look at yourself in the mirror, that you will look 10x better when you have your foundation on, eye liner, eye shadow, blush, lipstick, and earrings on. So don’t be too alarmed if you don’t see yourself as beautiful just yet.

Youtube is also a great place to learn things. You could Youtube up a search such as “picking a wig”. No doubt there now exists lots of self help videos here. I’ve seen lots on make up techniques and many other things. But we must all keep in mind that we are all different. So what works for some, may not work for others.

Also some CDs (and TGs) like a variety of styles which is great! I’ve tried a few different looks in my days, but always gravitate to just one look that I know works for me. If you find one that works, then that is great in itself as then you can have the confidence of how you project yourself to others in all other situations you will come upon such as going out, etc.

I hope this was of help, and Happy Hairstyle Hunting! XOXO Little Miss Christi

I enjoyed reading this and couldn't agree more. I'm a natural red head and have several red wigs that I wear daily. They're a bob and short but cute coif that is nice in the summer months. I also have several brunette wigs like that one I'm wearing in my avatar. I've had  lot of luck ordering wigs from Paula Young.
