Queen of Spades Award: Introduction

Welcome to the Queen of Spades Awards!

The Queen of Spades Award honors those women who are of different ethnicity and have been romantically involved with black men in film, TV, and other feature venues. A King of Spade award is given to their accompanying costar. It's kind of like the interracial King and Queen high school prom for film... and TV... and... well, wherever else we can find this rare combination. Mind you, the Queen of Spades Award is not to be confused with the Queen of Spades cuckold lifestyle. Although the terminology is a derivative, the basis is completely separate. Of course, as always, if you don’t know you better Google it.

When it comes to interracial relationships on the screen it’s almost as if there were a supernatural force somewhere that can’t be named, Hollywood, that prevents this type of relationship from appearing in popular media. A song comes to mind, Public Enemies - burn Hollywood burn. However, instead of spreading the hate it would be more productive to celebrate the beauty of those women who don’t discriminate.

On the other side of the coin, It seems some people try to keep it a secret that black men are interested in the same thing that most other ethnicity of men are interested in. This interest can be summed up in one word, booty. I’m not sure what the big deal is but most black men don’t have anything against any other ethnicity of women. In reality, sometimes it’s just about the booty, nuthin but the booty, and oh lawd does she have a nice booty so help me god!

Yet, I digress. The women nominated for the Queen Spades Awards are brave individuals tearing down the last dregs of the walls that stand between relationships of any ethnicity and discrimination. It’s like they are on an enterprising trek through the stars into the realm of taboo darkness, boldly exploring avenues into relationships that they may not have considered before.

The Queen of Spades awards are divided into three categories:

Category 1 - The Main Award

The main award for Queen of Spades is the Queen of Spade Award. What a coincidence :) Mostly because nothing else sounds as catchy. For a nominee to be granted this award they have to have been romantically interested in a black male. Any scene where a couple may have kissed, implied sexual relations, or romantic involvement with the intent to commit to a long term relationship is viable. There may be special cases where a nominee is declined an award or given an award due to the nature of the media involved. Regardless, a synopsis for why a particular person is chosen will be included.

Category 2 - Honorary Award

Honorary Queen of Spades awards are given to candidates who have an implied interest but due to the nature of a body of media never get around to expressing their feelings for each other. This award is for those times when a viewer gets the "they’re gonna hook up feeling" and then the movie for some reason or another digresses. This would have been called the, “Well hell! they may as well have!” Award but for simplicity we shortened the title. On a side note, there’s nothing worse than waiting for “it” to happen like you've got one hand on your mouse and you’re scrolling through a video only to be disappointed in the end. Nothing compares to the sense of frustration one feels when the viewer feels like they could have done the same thing in less time and had something to show for it.

However, there is value in knowing that the titular character is thinking about it. It highlights the struggles that some women have without societal pressures which gives a greater perception of the dilemmas and challenges facing individuals in interracial relationships no matter their ethnicity or gender. Let’s be honest, we may be discussing interracial relationships, but there are people out there who went against their families wishes simply because someone else had a different religion.

Category 3 Runner Up

The Runner Up is similar to the Honorary award except nothing is specifically stated. This is for those cases where a couple may have not had any intentions of hooking up, the movie doesn't allude to any relationship, but the characters bond in some form or another.

In this case, a pairing might not happen and neither character is thinking about getting together but due to the nature of conflict in the movie its likely it may happen later like in a second episode. We've all seen movies where two characters seem destined to get together given the circumstances but they never broached the subject. They may be too busy trying to run away from the antagonist of the film and after the movie is over the black guy and the white chic are the only two people left alive. Normally a viewer might expect a love scene but its the end of the movie so it wouldn't fit.

These movies may end with that - just glad to be alive sensation, in which case neither character is thinking about a long term commitment. However, because they both went through the same experience a bond has been formed. If it were a western, the two might ride off into the sunset after a long kiss but something inevitably distracts them like how to get home because the vehicle has been destroyed or they are left stranded somewhere and not fully out of danger.

This award differs from the Honorary award because the spectators of the film are left wondering how the heck they're going to get back home. So the runner up award is more synonymous as a cliffhanger then an actual conclusion to the movie. The characters still have more to go through that keep them preoccupied from romantic thought. Most viewers are just relieved that they are out of the fire and into the frying pan as opposed to wondering whether they will ignite the fire to the sparks they've already felt. Hell, the characters themselves are probably thinking, “Yeah I could go for some, but how do we get home first?”

There are already several people in mind for these awards but the biggest question has been who should go first? If you’d like to participate you can put your input in for who you’d like to see receive the very first Award for The Queen of spades. Keep in mind, the first award will not determine an overall winner, the other two on the list will still receive an award, it will simply come later.
