Hook VCR to tuner card, run movie while recording it on the computer. But, it takes a lot of HD space, a lot. Then you run the software to convert it to an avi or other format and make the size manageable.
1) purchased a DVD/VHS player/recorder. These machines come with both a DVD player and a VHS tape player but also allows you to record from the VHS tape to a DVD. Unfortunately this puts the new digital movie into a format that will play on your computer but will not allow you to copy it using basic software.
2) once I have converted the VHS tape to a DVD I then play it through AVS software (google AVS Video Editor). You can download the software free of charge but any video you make will have a promotion for AVS over the image. I have paid to upgrade to AVS Video editor which allows you to copy the DVD to your computer in a number of formats, which can then be uploaded onto xhamster
